Politics is the Art of Compromise. --Woodrow Wilson
The purpose of studying politics and public administration is to deepen knowledge and understanding of the most powerful forces affecting people, communities, and corporations today—government and politics. Doing so involves interactive conversations between students and instructors about current or historical events created by the actions (or inactions) of both elite and non-elite people in the course of their daily lives. My role as a teacher is to provide students the context in which to understand the motivations behind such decisions, critically evaluate those motivations, and assess the significance of the actions undertaken. More importantly, I hope my students understand, intellectually and emotionally, that their present lives are the result of a series of such actions taken by individuals who usually did not completely understand the implication of (or foresaw) the consequences. In addition to the cold rules and dirty business of politics, they can also find the glory of humanity deeply embedded in this history.
